Gippsland Grammar’s rowing program stands as the premier regional rowing powerhouse in Victoria. Grounded in a tradition of athletic excellence, community spirit, and sportsmanship, the school regularly hosts the Sale Small Boats Head Regatta on the iconic waters of the Sale Canal.
The Sale Small Boats Head brings together over 120 rowers and hundreds of spectators to the banks of the Sale Canal for a thrilling day of head racing. As the only independent school rowing program east of Melbourne, Gippsland Grammar takes immense pride in welcoming crews from across Victoria—including top-tier Melbourne institutions—to race on local waters.
The Course: A high-octane head race through the historic Sale Canal, testing crew endurance, rhythm, and navigation.
The Racing: Time-trial style events ranging from Single Sculls to Coxed Quads and Fours across Junior, Intermediate, and Senior divisions.
The Atmosphere: A festival-like community event complete with local food stalls, spectator banks, and unmatched regional hospitality.
