The Maffra Mardi Gras is a cherished annual community tradition run by the Rotary Club of Maffra in Gippsland, Victoria. Established back in 1957 by a group of local businessmen looking to raise funds for the Maffra and District Hospital, it has since grown into the Wellington Shire's oldest running community event.
Over the decades, the event has raised more than $4 million for local groups, sporting clubs, schools, and charities. The core format involves local organizations putting forward Fundraising Entrants who spend weeks running various events and activities to raise money, keeping the majority of the proceeds for their specific projects.
The campaign culminates in a massive street carnival and twilight parade along Johnson Street featuring market stalls, food trucks, children's entertainment, marching bands, and creative community floats.
Marking its milestone 70th anniversary, the 2027 Maffra Mardi Gras will be featuring a fun '1950s' theme.
